Interwoven Legacies is a multi-disciplinary exploration of identity, tradition, and liberation, told through the intersections of being an Asian American, gay Malay Muslim. The conceptual framework bridges two foundational worlds: the deliberate structure of my heritage and professional design background, and the uninhibited freedom of my artistic and personal self-actualization.Growing up in a religious Muslim household in Singapore, I was taught that faith is anchored in clarity, devotion, and following the five pillars of Islam. Running parallel to this spiritual foundation is my professional practice as an art director and designer, where form, function, and objectivity govern every color choice, typography selection, and layout through the strict discipline of grid systems. On the surface, both my faith and my design background represent highly structured frameworks. Yet, beneath that surface, their underlying philosophies are deeply complex, nuanced, and rich with internal meaning.
In sharp, beautiful contrast, my sexuality as a gay man and my approach to painting offer a liberating realm of unfiltered self-expression. Through this body of work, I explore the emotional dialogue between my structured design foundation and uninhibited expression. Grounded in decades of professional experience, the collection utilizes principles of composition, visual hierarchy, and balance not to constrain the medium, but to deliberately set the stage. Rather than forcing rigid boundaries, these works allow structure to meet its match in the unpredictable, living nature of pigments and washes, creating organic rivers of color that feel both meticulously deliberate and entirely free.
This interplay between geometric structure and fluid adaptation finds its deepest roots in my childhood memories of Malay culture in Singapore. There, heritage was physically and symbolically expressed through traditional weaving, blending, and communal gathering. The kain pelikat, the traditional checkered fabric worn by men for prayers at the mosque and in the comfort of home, carries a historic lineage stretching from trade routes of the past. Alongside it, the intricate craft of ketupat, where young coconut leaves are woven into precise vertical and horizontal patterns to encase rice for Eid celebrations, is deeply embedded in my sensory history.
Metaphorically, learning these intricate woven patterns aligns with how I view the intersection of my faith and my design background. The structured grid provides the essential tension, while the fluid movement gives it life. My art and my sexuality transcend my experience as an Asian American, defining what true freedom means to me and marking my continuous journey toward self-actualization. All of these elements, my upbringing in Singapore, my faith, my design discipline, my painting practice, and my identity as a gay Malay man—come together seamlessly to form the fabric of these Interwoven Legacies.
