RafiQ Flowers is a multidisciplinary artist, designer, and entrepreneur whose creative journey spans continents, mediums, and decades. Born in Singapore and as a first-generation college student, he earned his BFA from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts—drawing deeply from his heritage as an indigenous Malay of Singapore. Living at the intersection of diverse identities as a gay Muslim, he champions the truth that faith and authenticity can coexist in harmony.
An alchemist at heart, RafiQ has spent a lifetime turning the ordinary into the extraordinary. As the youngest of six brothers growing up in a working Singapore neighborhood, his early artistic flair turned heads as early as the first grade, culminating in a second-place win at the Singapore Zoological Art Competition by the second grade. These formative adventures instilled in him a lifelong view of art as both a powerful vehicle for self-expression and a path to independence.
He eventually moved to Dallas, Texas, with his partner (now his spouse), where he obtained a degree in Visual Communications at the Art Institute of Dallas. For over two decades, RafiQ operated at the intersection of high-stakes corporate branding and grassroots social impact. His career path was forged in the fast-paced environments of elite design agencies and global corporate offices, including roles as a Creative Director, where he mastered the art of visual storytelling and brand strategy. Yet, while he was building identities for industry giants, his heart was consistently found in his "after-hours" work: providing pro-bono creative services to local nonprofits.
After living in Texas for over two decades, he and his spouse intentionally moved to Buffalo, New York, to enjoy the four seasons, stay close to the lakes, and discover the charm of the Northeast. Stepping fully into entrepreneurship to channel his limitless curiosity, RafiQ avoids confining his work to a single school or style. Instead, his pieces blend the East and the West, the ancient and the modern, reflecting his individual history and expansive global perspective.
Working in varied scales across canvas, paper, textiles, and mixed media, RafiQ unites oil, watercolor, gouache, and acrylic to create layered, tactile works. His design philosophy serves as the guiding heartbeat of his experience, a philosophy rooted in continuous exploration, fueled by a love for travel, and shaped by a profound commitment to learning from the histories and cultures of communities around the world.
where artistry blooms in every medium.
ARTIST STATEMENT
Working in varied scales across canvas, paper, textiles, and mixed media, I bring together watercolor, gouache, and acrylic to create layered, tactile works. My creative process is rooted in exploration, fueled by a love for traveling and a commitment to learning from the history and cultures of communities around the world.
For RafiQ Flowers, creating art is all about the dance between holding on and letting go. As an art director and designer, RafiQ spends a lot of time thinking about structure, balance, and how things fit together. But on the canvas or paper, that instinct for order meets its match in the unpredictable, living nature of watercolor and fluid art.
Rather than fighting the medium, RafiQ uses that design background to set the stage, framing a space where vibrant pigments can spill over, bleed, and take on a life of their own. The work explores that sweet spot where a deliberate plan meets raw, unscripted emotion. It’s an invitation to pause, breathe, and witness what happens when we give ourselves permission to loosen the rules and let the color flow.
